Hotel Mount View & Spa, Dalhousie, Himachal Pradesh

screen-shot-2016-10-01-at-8-44-10-pm   If you’re after one of the best views in India, you’ll be hard-pressed to do better than the Hotel Mount View & Spa in Dalhousie. On a clear day the view of the mountains from the garden is sublime. It is enough to make you stop and gasp on your way to your room, regardless of the often long journey to get there.

But the view is just one of the hotel’s charms. The hotel is divided into two wings, with a beautifully tended garden running down the middle to the eponymous view, which you can enjoy from the pergola while sipping warming tea. And while it is centrally located near to the market and bus stand, the whole place is remarkably quiet.

Food in the restaurant is excellent, with a wide variety on offer at both breakfast and dinner, the latter usually accompanied by a live performance as well.

Despite being large the rooms are cosy, with the separate sitting area in ours making a great spot to enjoy a pre-dinner drink or a morning coffee. They have a real heritage feel to them, although this can be a bit of a downside since the state of the bathrooms and some of the fittings leave a lot to be desired – it could certainly do with some renovating. Another downside is the quality of the WiFi connection, which for us was non-existent.

However this is in part made up for by the friendliness of the staff. The spa is also worth a visit, with a quality of service that you would expect in one of the bigger cities.

Beware that the hotel is also popular with monkeys – which the staff do their best to deal with. So be careful about leaving anything out on your balcony, unless you want to donate your iPhone to a monkey.
