The Park Hotel, one of Kolkata’s top hotels and without a doubt its most happening, has a bit of a split personality. Downstairs, the lobby is gleaming white, punctuated by low coloured LED lighting and pops of bright furniture, while the layout is a little maze-like, contributing to a nightclubby feel. Then you head up to your room and if you have one of the higher-end rooms, you’ll walk into a room that is decorated in a classic, British-influenced style with heavy damask textiles, plush furnishings and a spacious bathroom. It’s almost like, the downstairs, with its nightclubs and bars, is for the kids, while upstairs is where the grownups hang out.
The Park is a chain of hotels across India aimed at a younger, funkier and clubbier generation, so I presume the older-fashioned decor is a way to accommodate older guests in at least one corner of the hotel. Otherwise, Kolkata’s Park – con sidered the flagship property of the Park group – is at the epicentre of the city’s nightlife, hosting the famous Tantra club, which is universally considered one of Kolkata’s best nightclubs, and certainly its most popular. Tantra regularly hosts theme nights, fashion shows and other major events.
The Park also has the extremely popular pub Someplace Else, which is modelled after a British pub and features live music, as well as food and drinks. There is Aqua, the poolside bar, where you can drink in enclosed cabanas looking over the LED-lit pool. Then there is Roxy, a street-level cocktail bar with a jumping dance floor, which is popular with locals.
The Park also hosts three other restaurants, including the pan-Asian Zen, and a street-level snack bar, aimed mostly at hungry nightclubbers.
The hotel has 149 rooms in all, most of them decorated in a bright-on-white colour scheme with low-level funky lighting that echo the lobby and nightclub decor. It also has a day spa, a gymnasium, a beauty salon, sauna and steam rooms, a pool, Jacuzzi and banquet rooms.
While it is excellently located on Park Street, right in the centre of town and ideal for business travellers, it is probably best suited for a leisure crowd, particularly on nights that the clubs are popular, as the noise might be off-putting for those with early meetings. Otherwise it is an excellent choice for your stay in Kolkata, particularly for those in town with a view to party.
